Dork in Disguise Harper Trophy Books Carol Gorman 9780064408912 Books Reviews

I really love this book. I can't tell how much truth there is when it comes too how junior high preteens really act. You can definitely relate to any of the characters. The theme is to be true to yourself and try not to be somebody that your not. Poor Jerry though he has to learn the hard way.
We bought this book because it was on a suggested reading for my daughter that is in the 4th grade. The lesson of the book is a very good lesson for all children to learn. Be who you are, don't be a phony! People like you the way you are. My only problem with the book was that there were 3 references to being "sexy". One incidence was refering to the way Jerry (the main character) would talk to a girl that he liked. The other two references were to clothing. I, as a parent, wasn't happy about that, but the lesson in the book was much more powerful. If this review helps, let me know.
Loved it best book ever read it I recommend it to anyoned I love the book and the fact it is a great book
THis is the funniest book ever published. Our whole class gets into hysterics when our teacher reads it. If you want to know about the book, it is about a former dork named Jerry Flack who wants to be cool. He befriends a fellow dork, Brenda McAddams. She tries to teach him how to be cool...obviousley, its working cuz the prettiest, most popular girl in school, Cinnimon O'Brian, actually likes him. A popular guy named Gabe Marshall also likes Cinnomon, and realizes that Jerry is lying about alot of things... he went hangliding with his dog, he was a lead guitar player in a band, he met Leonardo DiCapprio, he had a girlfriend named Madeline, and so forth. Gabe is competition for Jerry, but will Cinnomon choose Gabe or Jerry? This story is funny and touching at the same time. I HIGHLY recommend reading DORK IN DISGUISE!
I personally thought this story was great. It was a comedy with a twist of romance in there as well. Jerry Flack gets a new school, a new house, and new friends, and hopefully a new reputation. He has always been a geek, a nerd, a dork, and what everelse comes to mind to the kids who torment him constantly. With the help of his new friend, Brenda he turns his whole life around. Brenda helps him , talk the talk , walk the walk , but most importantly helps him look the look. Wil the "cool" kids accept him in his new school? Will he get Cinnamon to go to the fair with him? Read the book to find out !
Every middle schooler (and older, I'll bet) should read this book.

Thank you, NetGalley and Open Road Integrated Media, for this free book to review!

What I liked

1. Jerry is a protagonist that could relate to a lot of people. Who doesn't want to be cool?

2. He does things outside of school, such as science projects, teaching his dog how to collect newspapers, ect. His world doesn't revolve around school drama.

What I didn't like

1. I wish Cinnamon could have been put in her place. She needs to realize her problems.

Will I read the next book, Dork on the Run? I doubt it. I don't feel like this needs a sequel, except to deal with Cinnamon.
I really enjoyed this story for middle-graders. I'm not going to repeat what the story is about, since the description of the book has already done that. Here is why I liked the story. The way the characters behaved brought me right back to my middle school days. Each of the characters has a distinct personality, and their dialogue and antics really drew me in to the story. It's easy to empathize with Jerry as most people, at one time or another, have longed to fit in somewhere.

The story and characters are well-developed and well-written.The story also has a strong lesson about being true to yourself and loving who you are.I would highly recommend it and can't wait for my 12 yr. old grandson to read it. I liked it so much that I just bought book #2 in the series.
