Poirot Investigates Agatha Christie 9780007120703 Books

This is a collection of short stories, so the plots, moods, and pace are different for each one. As usual with Christie there are surprises in each story and the plots are not disappointing. If you like Hercule Poirot you'll like this book.

Poirot Investigates Agatha Christie 9780007120703 Books Reviews

I was pleasantly surprised with this collection of short-story mysteries. I had seen the television versions, but the stories are still a delight! Suchet performs brilliantly, able to play both the English characters as well as the delightfully Belgian Poirot. The best thing about these short mysteries is that if you wish to pit your wits against the Great Detective, they are solvable. Also, unlike some of the other CD collections, the mysteries end on the CD they start on, so you have 2-3 complete mysteries per CD. This is really great if you are using them in your car.
Nice collection of Poirot short stories. The stories are not in order, it just seems to be a compilation. If you already have other collections of Poirot short stories this probably isn't the book for you as it will contain repeats.
The wonderful actor, Mr. David Suchet, who brought Mr. Poirot, to life, is back ! His reading the short stories starring the great detective is a complete joy ! A MUST for any Agatha Christie fan. I JUST LOVED IT !!!!!!
Agatha Christie is a master mystery writer and if you've never read her before, or if you have, but haven't read any of her Hercule Poirot stories, this is a perfect introduction to both. I assure you, it will bring you back wanting more.
Feeling a bit bruised from my encounter with Marquez (see my review of One Hundred Years of Solitude (P.S.)) I sought some solace with an old friend. Dame Christie did not disappoint. _Poirot Investigates_ is a collection of brief (15 - 25 page) mysteries. While I am more familiar with her longer work (my personal favorite is And Then There Were None; Ustinov was great in Death on the Nile, although David Suchet *is* Poirot as demonstrated in Agatha Christie's Poirot The Definitive Collection) I had not previously read her shorter works. I was entertained.

What strikes me most in reading this collection is the characterization - the mannerisms of Poirot and the banter between the Belgian detective and Cpt. Hastings - the similarities between sleuth and side-kick have become a bit of a cliche by now, but in Christie's writing they seem honest and fresh. The stories themselves are the literary version of a petit four they are sweet, short, empty calories and can be consumed in a few minutes. Just what I needed, and perfect diversionary reading. Some of the mysteries had me calling "foul!" as a critical piece of information was witheld (a suspect's shoes, the speed of an ocean liner), but most of the time Christie provided all the information one needs to figure out the puzzle. The variety in the collection also kept the reading fresh - tales of murder, stolen gems, missing persons, blackmail and my favorite - a missing will.

This is ideal summer reading, given the length of the stories and the content. Also recommended for those seeking a bit of "lighter" reading, and especially for fans of Christie in general and of Poirot in particular.
Writers who have such a craft are rare to find and Agatha Christie is a true craftsman. She not only can write incredibly entertaining and suspenseful full novels, she's also a master of the short story—winding complex plots and characters into a few pages. Well done and well worth the read.
This collection of fourteen Poirot short stories was first published in 1924, four years after publication of the first Poirot book -- and Christie's first novel -- "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," and two years before her brilliant success with "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd." Probably because of the tremendous influence of the Sherlock Holmes stories -- most of which, of course, were short stories -- most mystery writers prior to World War II felt the need to write a series of short stories for their detectives. In fact, several of these stories are titled, Holmes-style, "The Case of ..." or "The Adventure of ...," But I don't think the short story was really the right venue for Poirot; by and large, I think the novels are better. Some of the stores in this collection are quite short -- only 12 or 13 pages -- which doesn't provide enough space for Christie to do much more than introduce the mystery and then have Poirot solve it.

If you are a Christie fan and haven't yet read these stories, then you will certainly find them enjoyable. But if you are new to Christie, I would first start with the novels. Finally, I really like these Harper paperback reprints. They are printed with a generous typeface and can be easily read without breaking the spine, making them suitable for multiple rereadings.
This is a collection of short stories, so the plots, moods, and pace are different for each one. As usual with Christie there are surprises in each story and the plots are not disappointing. If you like Hercule Poirot you'll like this book.
