i liked this book a lot, it's so funny. you really need to pay attention while reading, if you skim too much you may miss things and not quite catch some of the plot. it held my interest and i read in a little over a day. maybe the negative reviews were from readers who were expecting a more standard mystery, not a satire. you probably need a dry sense of humor to enjoy it. very different from this author's other books. read it with an open mind.

Potboiler Jesse Kellerman 9780399159039 Books Reviews

I have loved all of Jesse Kellerman's previous books. This one started out great but in the last third it becomes absurd. I get the satire but it becomes so muddled and improbable that it was no longer interesting. So over all an okay read but not near as good as his others.
I know this book is supposed to be funny but it wasn't. I had to make myself finish because I paid for it! I wouldn't have bought it if I had read the reviews first. It could have been a decent book with a decent story line but turned out to be stupid. I have read much better by Jesse Kellerman - what was he thinking here???
The apple sure didn't fall far from the tree! Jesse's parents are both very prolific authors. I have nearly all their books, and now I'm collecting Jesse's
I love reading Faye Kellerman and Jonathan Kellerman. This is only my second book by Jess Kellerman...I wanted to enjoy this book.....It was boring and might appeal to some people, but to this mystery book reader, I am reluctant to buy another book by Jess Kellerman....Hopefully with time he will find his voice..I don't think this is his best...Hope not anyway...
This book is part mystery, part spoof. Jesse Kellerman seems to be having fun with this thriller, which changes pace at least twice in the novel. Arthur Pfefferkorn, a middle-age adjunct professor who wrote one novel couldn't complete another, while his college friend Bill de Vallee has made a fortune with more than 30 books about Dick Stapp, an invincible "hero" who finds himself foiling complex conspiracies.

Pfefferkorn has read a couple of the Stapp books, but not many because they're full of bad writing. The public loves the series, though and De Vallee has it made, right up until he dies in a boating accident.

Pfefferkorn goes to the memorial service, where he comforts the grieving widow, whom he had lusted after in college, in the bedroom. She shows an unfinished manuscript to Pfefferkorn. Pfefferkorn steals the last de Vallee manuscript, changes the names, issues it under his own name, and becomes a best-selling author.

It is at this point that the book has a true change of pace. It turns out that de Vallee was actually working for the government, and that the bad writing and trite catchphrases are actually encrypted directives ordering clandestine activities for operatives in deep cover in obscure countries in Europe.

This tongue-in-cheek thriller-farce is fun to read and well written.
I had "Potboiler" down loaded by to my & I was so looking foreward to reading it. It is garbage. I enjoyed Jesse Kellerman's previous 3 books enormously so I expected more of the same quality. If this is supposed to be a joke,it is, & the joke's on me. Because I paid good money for this dreck. I would return it if that were possible with . He may think that he is very clever. I do not & this is the last book writen by him, that will be purchased by me. The best I can say about it is that it was well edited. The grammer & spelling is correct. Other than that, it has no merit. I assume that it is intended as some kind of parody with a ridiculous plot, stupid names & childish dialogue. If you enjoyed his previous books, do not attempt to read this one. You will be as disgusted as I am.
After reading and really enjoying his previous three books, I was excited to read Kellerman's fourth novel. It started out well and I thought I would enjoy the book. By the middle of the book and our introduction to a made up world I struggled to continue. I rarely stop reading a book and can count on one hand the books I started and hated so much I could not finish. I did manage to finish Potboiler, but it was not easy, and I found myself rushing and reading over the nonsense at about chapter 92. I hope the author will continue to write in the vein of his books Sunstroke and Genius. I will give him one more try when his next book comes out, but it will be with a certain amount of hesitation.
