I would recommend this to anyone who has been to Turkey or to anyone who would like to go there. It is somewhat historical as the town they stayed in, Gocek, has become a much larger, more developed, more sophisticated tourist area with all of the modern amenities. But the bones of the original are still there. The people are recognizable. The natural beauty of the area is still breathtaking. When I travel, I always try to imagine myself living there. Certainly as a resident, even for only a year, the relationship with the natives would be different - more companionable, less as an economic "opportunity". It is possible, if you are in the know, to try to dig behind the opportunism and find the real folks. The tea, the aggressive salesmanship, all becomes part of the local color. The reader can immerse in this couple's experiences and appreciate the fun and the challenges of doing what they did: break from the normal hectic pace of life, adapt, accept what you cannot change, reconnect with people at an elemental level. Thanks to the authors for writing this. I loved it.

Tea Bee Milk Our Year In A Turkish Village Karen Gilden Ray Gilden 9781886922129 Books Reviews
A combined journal and travelogue, this book gives a wonderful introduction to Turkey. It emphasizes the fantastic qualities of the Turkish people, especially their hospitality. Further, it gives a fabulous word picture of the beauty of its landscape as well as insight into daily life in a small village. Much has changed in the past fifteen or so years, but the God-created views have not nor the hearts of the people.
The title of this book intrigued me as we had visited Turkey in 1971 and I wondered whether there had been big changes there in the intervening years. I enjoyed the account of the year the authors spent revisiting places and ruins along the coast while based in a small coastal village. What a privilege to spend a long time learning to know and understand another culture!
When the Gildens spent a year in Turkey, they had no idea how many people they were taking along with them. I loved my trip seen through their eyes. I didn't take a tour, or hear the spiel many tourists hear when they travel in a foreign country instead I experienced Turkey from the perspective of someone living there who had to make decisions about what road to travel on, what person to connect with, what food to eat and where. I learned to know about some places I had never heard of, experience some traditions that I had never thought of, and get a glimpse into the daily lives of people who live half a world away from me. I am better for the experience. We broaden our lives when we begin to understand the lives of others. Thank you, Gildens, for helping to broaden mine, and having done so with humor and great storytelling.
For anyone who knows Turkey it is clear that Gilden's experiences were authentic. No people anywhere are more hospitable or good natured that Turks. Gilden captures that through a series of anecdotes that are alternatively funny, touching, but also insightful about some of modern Turkey's problems. If you have only visited Antalya, Bodrum, and Istanbul as a tourist, "Tea and Bee's Milk will give you a good idea of what you are missing. It will also make you wish that you could travel with the Gildens!
Have you ever dreamed of spending a year in some far-flung exotic destination? I've just recently completed an absolutely amazing 12-month epic adventure on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey; well, actually, thanks to Karen and Ray Gilden's remarkable book, "Tea & Bee's Milk Our Year in a Turkish Village," I've experienced this journey without a visa and without ever leaving the comfort of my cushy American easy chair. But what a trip it's been!
Karen and Ray have actually pursued the big dream that most of us rarely even ponder, by taking advantage of an offer of a fully-furnished apartment in coastal Turkey for just $125 a month. Being the adventurous types they are they couldn't resist selling the house and car, quitting their jobs, and taking off on an exhilarating year-long indulgence of primal wanderlust. Along the way, they took on the task of telling their story, very carefully capturing their rich experiences in photos and in truly golden words that bring their travels and explorations to real life. They've approached their odyssey with wide-open curiosity, living and loving every moment to its fullest.
"Tea & Bee's Milk" savors all the subtle nuances, aromas, flavors, laughter, quirks, customs and culture of the Turkish people in a charming style that puts the reader right there, right now, right into all the sights, shops ("pazars"), restaurants, homes, farms, harbors, antiquities and beyond--right smack dab into the awesome middle of it all. They take great care not to insulate themselves from this exotic place, but instead, to soak it all in. Deeply. With open eyes, open minds, and open hearts.
This is an engaging book you'll want to devour on "Turkish time," or "yavas, yavas," as the Turks say. Slowly, slowly! "Tea & Bee's Milk" once again proves that, in order to genuinely experience a place, it is far better to live there than to simply travel there. And it's not just the length of their time spent, but the intimate depth--from bartering the price of an impromptu massage to luxuriating in a world-class 80-cent haircut, off in this oddly ("different country, different customs") touchy-feely land--that makes the journey all the more delightful, from one fun adventure to the next. No matter how well-stamped your passport may be, definitely read this unforgettable and authentic memoir!
I thought the book is/was thoughtful with a lot of deep feelings about the the travelers' experiences and the people and the places and the shared moments. When I discovered the pictures at the very end I felt like I had missed something. I guess because I felt like I was an intimate observer of the trip, I want to have been able to meet each of the 'characters' as they were introduced. Thanks for sharing! Years ago as a late teen I spent a tour there, traveling when I could, and often since then wishing I would have had more resources then to have explored more of this wonderful country and its beautiful people.
I would recommend this to anyone who has been to Turkey or to anyone who would like to go there.
